Students across Ugandan secondary schools have shared mixed yet mostly positive views on schools conducting pregnancy tests, emphasizing sensitive handling of results.

Many, like Nisha Nakiwala from S3 at Old Kampala Secondary School, argue that periodic tests deter students from engaging in sexual activities. Martha Apio Aumo from Priscilla Comp Girls’ SS supports them for enabling timely antenatal planning, provided information remains confidential and leads to guidance.

Martina Wendy of Mengo SS suggests term-start tests to clarify if pregnancies occurred in or out of school, protecting institutions from parental blame while offering private counseling. Zoe Praise Ssemitego from S4 Old Kampala SS adds that tests reveal student behavior patterns, allowing schools to counsel pregnant girls and encourage prevention among others.

Privacy is a recurring theme. Amos Malinga and Catherine Asego from Priscilla Comp Girls’ SS insist results stay secret to avoid stigma. Sharifah Nalwoga from S4 Old Kampala SS warns against public sharing, which could harm mental health and academics, advocating private classes instead of expulsion.

Some propose additional measures: Husnah Namatovu from S3 Old Kampala SS calls for health checks with reproductive counseling and temporary suspensions. Shafic Muhindo from S3 Kampala Secondary School cites risks like in-exam births, urging preparation.

Opposition comes from Gloria Apio of S3 Kampala SS, who says tests justify harmful expulsions. Fatma Ibrahim from S3 Old Kampala SS favors early detection and parental involvement without sending girls away. Haddassah Cortez from S4 Kampala Secondary School cautions against public results leading to bullying or desperate acts like illegal abortions.

A minority, like Everline Aisu from S3 Priscilla Comp Girls’ SS, even supports publicizing results as lessons, though most prioritize confidentiality and support.
