Police in Uganda’s Wamala Region have arrested four individuals linked to the theft of a three-week-old baby boy named Dylan Sentume from his mother’s home in Kitonzi, Mubende District.
The incident occurred on April 25 when the mother, Aine Mbabazi Janet, briefly left the child alone to shop at a nearby trading centre. Upon returning, she found him missing and alerted neighbors and local leaders, leading to a police report at Rubimbiri Sub-county station.
Investigators received a tip implicating Yahaya Sebuliba, who confessed to being hired by Jovia Nakaccwa, a resident of Namagogo Village in Mubende Municipality. Nakaccwa had reportedly faked a pregnancy for nine months to convince her husband, Claude Ndayizeyi, that she had given birth.
After arresting Sebuliba and Ndayizeyi, who confirmed the deception, police tracked Nakaccwa to Sharon Kababiito’s home in Kiruuma Trading Centre. They raided the location at 5:30am on Monday, rescuing the healthy infant and detaining Nakaccwa and Kababiito.
The baby is set to reunite with his mother as probes continue. Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi warned men against skipping antenatal duties, noting it leaves them vulnerable to such frauds.
Baby thefts are common in Uganda, often driven by motives like faking pregnancies, trafficking, or rituals. Recent cases include attempts at Kawempe and Kayunga hospitals, and thefts in Koboko and Masaka.
