Edward Bazanye Sempebwa, aided by a walking stick, received a guard of honour at Lugogo Cricket Oval on April 11 amid thunderous applause from players, administrators, and fans spanning generations. The event highlighted his lifelong commitment to cricket, marked by a Bagurusi Legends T20 match featuring nostalgic performances like Benjamin Musoke’s half-century and Bashir Ansasiira’s three wickets.
In his humble acceptance speech, Sempebwa downplayed his achievements, questioning if he truly deserved the honour despite his stellar record. He represented Uganda from 1972 to 1976, earning fame as a top opening batter with multiple half-centuries, particularly shining between 1968 and 1976 alongside partners like Pesweri Nyangabyaki. Memorable moments included a standout match against Ghana in Jinja.
Sempebwa played a crucial role in reviving cricket post-1972 Asian expulsion, rebuilding from schools and clubs with peers like Sam Walusimbi, who praised him as Uganda’s finest opener. His career extended to Kenya from 1976-1986 with clubs like Wanderers and Impala, rubbing shoulders with East African stars.
Beyond cricket, Sempebwa excelled in multiple sports at King’s College Budo, captaining tennis, swimming, and football while playing piano in chapel. He honed skills at Sevenoaks School in the UK and later advanced in IT, becoming Director of Information Services at UBOS with international training. Known for his love of fast cars, music, and socializing, he advocates sport for building children’s resilience.
Looking ahead, Sempebwa praised emerging talents like Simon Ssesazi and Ronald Lutaaya, affirming a bright future for Ugandan cricket. Over 60 years, he bridged eras as player, selector chairman, and custodian of the game.
