Helen Basuuta Nangonzi always pictured herself as a university lecturer after earning a top degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University. Instead, a casual chat with a Standard Chartered Bank professional during her dissertation fieldwork changed everything. She followed up, applied for a sales position, and surprisingly landed a middle-management role in product development despite zero experience.
Thrown into the deep end, Nangonzi felt out of place in management meetings but used it as fuel to learn quickly. She asked questions, listened intently, and built skills on the job. Her 14 years at Standard Chartered saw her rotate through roles every few years, from product management and CEO executive assistant to marketing, customer experience, HR, and regional duties in Nairobi.
Mentors and supportive colleagues propelled her forward, fostering a ‘generalist’ perspective that helps her connect business functions. In Nairobi as head of corporate affairs, brand, and marketing, she battled imposter syndrome by over-preparing through courses and extra effort.
After becoming a mother, she returned to Uganda and joined Absa Bank during its rebrand from Barclays. As marketing and customer experience director, she focused on rebuilding trust with frustrated customers and empowering her team. She takes pride in their promotions and growth, viewing success through human impact rather than titles alone.
Nangonzi stresses integrity, consistency, and paying it forward. Balancing career and family, she prioritizes being present at home while crediting her husband and support network. Her legacy goal: a reliable colleague, attentive mother, and supportive wife.
