Owen Salamu, a 19-year-old Senior Six student at St Mark SS Kayunga, has emerged as the hero of the Mukono Zonal Football Championships. Originally a skilled midfielder, he switched to goalkeeper almost by accident and quickly became indispensable.

In 2023, during a youth tournament with Galacticos in Mukono, Salamu stepped in for an absent keeper. He saved three penalties, securing victory in the Mujuta Cup at U15 level. This performance marked the start of his full conversion to the position, followed by training at Rama Soccer Academy in Luweero.

Coaches praise his discipline and mentality, which helped him unlearn midfield habits. At St Mark SS, head coach Felix Ssekabuuza highlights Salamu’s reliability under pressure, especially his shot-stopping and one-on-one skills. He notes areas for growth like defensive communication.

Salamu conceded only one goal across district and zonal stages, aiding qualification for nationals in Lira starting May 10, 2026. A narrow 1-0 semifinal loss to Mehta ended their zonal run, but he was named best goalkeeper.

His path wasn’t easy. Family tensions led his painter father to oppose football, prompting coaches like Isaac Nteza to provide support and stability. Now focused, Salamu eyes bigger opportunities beyond school commitments.
