Security Guard Held for Smashing Girlfriend's Head with Gun Butt in Gulu
Police in Gulu City have arrested security guard Albert Okonye after he allegedly killed his girlfriend Barbara Faith Akello by striking her head with a gun butt during a domestic dispute at a fuel station. A security guard in Gulu City faces murder charges after a violent altercation with his girlfriend ended in her death. Albert Okonye, employed by 7 Guidance Security Ltd, reportedly attacked Barbara Faith Akello at Shine Fuel Station in Industrial Area village, Bardege-Layibi Division, on Wednesday night.
The dispute erupted after Okonye received a phone call from an unknown man, sparking jealousy and rage. Witnesses described seeing him smash her head with his gun butt while she screamed for help, claiming her partner was killing her.
Nearby bakery worker Jaffer Mbogo recounted how he and others mistook Akello for a thief at first. Okonye threatened to shoot anyone who intervened, including his colleague Jimmy Omara who tried to step in.
A fuel station staffer noted this was Akello’s third late-night visit to check on Okonye since his deployment a month ago. After a tense phone conversation, he confronted her aggressively.
Okonye fled after abandoning the damaged gun but was quickly tracked down and detained. Scene-of-crime officers recovered a submachine gun with a broken butt and other evidence from Gulu City Central Police Station.
Aswa West Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong stated that Akello’s body was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem. Investigations continue, with the case to be forwarded for prosecution.
This tragedy is the second in Gulu City in under 10 days, following the April 23 stabbing of police constable Harriet Akera by her boyfriend Denis Brian Apire in the same division.
