Uganda stands at the threshold of an industrial boom as first oil production approaches in mid-2026. The 11th Annual Oil and Gas Convention in Kampala highlighted how this milestone can fuel broader economic growth.

Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi emphasised that oil development must extend beyond extraction to link with manufacturing, petrochemicals, and value addition. He described this as a decisive phase for transforming Uganda into a regional hub for petrochemical industries and exports, boosting GDP and jobs.

Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Ambassador Col (Rtd) Fred Mwesigye, urged East African states to harmonise policies for projects like Tilenga, Kingfisher, and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). He stressed intentional collaboration between Uganda and Tanzania to turn potential into shared prosperity, while local firms need to adopt technology and standards for competitiveness.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via Ambassador Richard Kabonero, committed to commercial diplomacy, repositioning 36 missions to attract investments in oil, gas, and minerals under the 2026–2030 strategy.

Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa updated on progress: Tilenga has drilled 152 wells (145 needed for first oil), Kingfisher is 70% complete, EACOP over 71%, and Kabalega Airport 96%. The $4 billion refinery eyes a final investment decision in July 2026, with Kabalega Industrial Park construction starting soon, backed by 31 investors.

This shift to operations promises sustained opportunities for decades in a robust industrial ecosystem.
