The US Treasury Department has targeted former DRC President Joseph Kabila with sanctions, citing his financial and political backing of armed groups that drive instability in the country’s eastern region.

Kinshasa has accused Kabila of aiding Rwanda-backed M23 rebels amid ongoing conflict. The Treasury’s statement highlights how such support exacerbates violence in the area.

Department spokesperson Thomas Pigott affirmed US solidarity with Congolese citizens, urging regional leaders to oppose those fueling unrest. He emphasized accountability for undermining peace initiatives like the Washington Accords and Doha Framework.

Kabila, who ruled for nearly two decades before stepping down amid protests, was sentenced to death in absentia last year by a Kinshasa military court for war crimes, treason, and crimes against humanity linked to rebel support. He denies the charges, claiming judicial bias, and has been living largely in South Africa since late 2023, with a brief appearance in rebel-held Goma in May.

Tshisekedi’s administration has suspended Kabila’s political party and seized assets of its leaders.
