Vipers solidified their position at the top of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against rivals KCCA under the lights at Phillip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
The Venoms started brightly, believing they had scored when Enoch Ssebagala’s deflected effort found the net on 15 minutes. However, the assistant referee flagged for offside, a call upheld by the center referee despite protests from the Vipers players.
Eight minutes later, Ssebagala tested KCCA keeper Mutwalibi Mugolofa again, but the shot was parried for a corner. The match turned physical, with KCCA’s Saidi Mayanja booked for elbowing Yunus Sentamu.
KCCA struck first on 36 minutes. Shafik ‘Nana’ Kwikiriza’s pass set up Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who was fouled in the box by Baddy Da Silva. Ahimbisibwe converted the penalty for his 12th league goal of the season.
KCCA dominated the second half, creating chances through Sammy Sebaduka and Kwikiriza, but failed to extend their lead. Their vulnerability was exposed in the dying moments when substitute Glodi Beyuku Munsi latched onto Karim Watambala’s pass and fired past Mugolofa for the equalizer.
With the draw, Vipers now sit on 52 points, seven clear of challengers with four matches left. KCCA’s eight-year trophy drought looks set to continue, potentially sparking changes in coaching and squad.
The packed stadium’s contrasting fan reactions said it all—Vipers’ title is theirs to lose.
