During International Labour Day celebrations in Buikwe District, President Yoweri Museveni stressed that embracing wealth creation strategies, particularly in agriculture, is the most effective path to sustainable jobs for Ugandans. He pointed to successful farmers like Mr. Richard Nyakana, who thrives on a small plot with poultry and dairy, earning substantial income and employing others.
The President argued that with 40 million acres of arable land, job creation is achievable if citizens adopt proven models. He encouraged Ugandans to focus on enterprises like poultry farming on even small plots, rather than waiting for traditional jobs to appear. Museveni cautioned against hasty business decisions and advised seeking loans from institutions like the Uganda Development Bank over commercial banks due to lower interest rates.
Addressing the welfare of workers, the President announced plans for government-facilitated affordable housing near industrial parks and pledged to increase funding for the Parish Development Model, urging loan repayments to ensure its continuity.
President Museveni also reflected on Uganda’s growing industrial sector, attributing its success to peace and strategic investments in electricity. He urged MPs to support infrastructure projects, including power expansion, oil refinery development, water transport, and railway construction.
Discussions also touched upon wetland preservation, with examples like Limoto Wetland showing how shifting to fish farming can be highly profitable. The President noted concerns about underutilized NSSF funds and proposed their investment in infrastructure like toll roads.
Other dignitaries, including Vice President Jessica Alupo and Minister Betty Amongi, acknowledged the government’s efforts in ensuring peace and fostering development. Union representatives like Okello Musa and employer representatives like Fred Bamwesigye commended recent labor legislation and development plans, while also raising concerns about worker accommodation and education-job mismatch.
