The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has launched Instances of Exceptional Moments of Hunger, a vibrant anthology of short stories from 19 emerging talents across 16 countries in Global Africa.
This project stems from the 2024 CANEX Creative Writing Workshop under the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, aimed at nurturing bold literary voices. Stories, some translated from Arabic, French, and Portuguese into English, delve into identity, longing, and survival.
Published with Narrative Landscape Press in Nairobi and Lagos, the book is available on Amazon in paperback. Kanayo Awani, Afreximbank’s executive vice president for Intra-African Trade, called it a key investment in Africa’s creative sector, fostering IP for international formats like film.
Dr. Eghosa Imasuen, the publisher, praised the workshop in Aburi, Ghana, for providing a space for growth. He noted the stories capture human experiences like hunger, faith, and desire with raw courage.
Writers include Audrey Obuobisa-Darko, Basma Jaheen, Benjamin Cyril Arthur, and others like Nabunya Hadijah Sebunyah from Uganda. CANEX Creations Inc. will handle commercialization, with African entries submitted for the Caine Prize.
This initiative boosts Africa’s creative economy through talent development and export growth.
