Joel Okalani leads Ekikumba Fusion, a Kampala-based collective reimagining second-hand garments from Owino Market and beyond into vibrant, culturally resonant pieces. Emerging from the city’s dynamic youth scene, it fuses thrift finds with high-fashion flair, blending music, beach vibes, and visual narratives.

In contrast to past Ugandan fashion’s elite exclusivity—where stars name-dropped global designers like Louis Vuitton or Dior—Ekikumba Fusion democratizes style. Okalani views today’s African fashion renaissance as youth-driven, fueled by social media and authentic expression rather than Western copies. ‘Fashion connects us without limits, carrying culture across borders,’ he notes.

Tackling high costs and limited access, the group uses reworked thrift items for eco-friendly, budget-friendly designs. This counters the mindset that local wear is inferior or overpriced, while imported second-hand clothes were prized. Through striking events and showcases, they create a ‘halo effect’ to elevate perceptions.

Operating as a collaborative ecosystem, Ekikumba Fusion unites hundreds of designers, models, musicians, and creatives. It fosters cross-disciplinary teamwork, vital for Uganda’s youth-majority population seeking expression and community.

On the continental stage, they shone at the Johnnie Walker Afro Exchange at Silo 15, unveiling avant-garde streetwear from recycled textiles, Afro-futurist designs with metallic beads, and heritage-infused tailoring. Partnering with artists like Elijah Kitaka, who revives old pieces, they highlight sustainable innovation from local markets to global stages.

Ultimately, Ekikumba Fusion repositions fashion as cultural infrastructure—affordable, participatory, and identity-affirming—for a brighter African future.
