Key Factors Influencing Food Security in Uganda

Food security goes beyond production, encompassing access to affordable, nutritious food, adequate cooking fuel, and stable conditions free from conflict or drought. Challenges like high costs, poor weather, and displacement hinder families from meeting their nutritional needs. Farming is central to food production, yet households can still face shortages due to issues like insufficient cooking fuel. Urban dwellers on low incomes often struggle with expensive food prices.

True food security means families can easily obtain sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for healthy growth and active lives. Shortfalls lead to insecurity, exacerbated by farming setbacks such as fertilizer shortages or erratic rainfall.

City residents risk ongoing hunger when limited earnings force reliance on cheap, high-calorie staples like maize flour and rice, skipping proteins. Lack of fuel for cooking further limits access to beans or meat.

Conflict disrupts everything: it displaces people, cuts off income, blocks seed and fertilizer access, and hampers market transport. Displaced farmers, lacking secure land, lose motivation for production and depend on aid, often prepared without clean water.

Seeds for crops and fodder for livestock are essential. Costly improved seeds lead to lower yields from alternatives, while droughts reduce grass and water, slashing milk, eggs, and other animal products.
