Uganda’s tourism landscape is transforming beyond mere visitor counts, emphasizing professional packaging, pricing, and perceptions in national parks and urban areas.

A craftswoman improving beadwork for exports and a lodge owner enhancing services post-negative review exemplify this shift toward credibility, driven by partnerships, policies, and market demands for sustainability.

The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo, set for May 21-23, introduces the Poate Awards 2026. EU Ambassador Jan Sadek launched the awards, stressing their role in celebrating excellence, innovation, and sustainability. He noted tourism’s cultural bridging and inclusive growth, with awards recognizing job creators and standard-raisers for global travelers.

EU support includes €40 million in initiatives like the €15.5 million We Explore program, aiding finance access, eco-certification, and market entry while benefiting communities.

Challenges persist in trust, such as hotel grading and human-wildlife conflicts, requiring standards and communication. Uganda Tourism Board’s Deputy CEO Samora Semakula reported 1.5 million arrivals, Shs 4.8 trillion receipts, and 3.6% GDP contribution, with growth ongoing.

Semakula highlighted sustainability for conscious travelers, biodiversity, culture, and community revenue sharing—20% from protected areas—to foster local support. The 10th Poate Awards honor the full ecosystem, from conservation to hospitality, boosting storytelling and global competitiveness.
