Uganda Athletics is sending a mixed 4x400m relay team to the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, for the second consecutive year. The quartet—Haron Adoli, Shida Leni, Kenneth Omuka, and Maureen Banura—will compete this weekend at the Botswana National Stadium.
Last year in Guangzhou, China, the team finished fifth in Repechage 2 with a national record of 3:15.26 seconds. This time, they hope to crack the top 12 for a spot at next year’s Beijing World Championships and the top six for the Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
The team earned their places by dominating trials at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on April 11, clocking 3:17.97. Leni, who recently ran 52.85 seconds at the Kip Keino Classic, will make her third World Relays appearance.
Adoli arrived early in Botswana, placing fourth in the 400m at the Golden Grand Prix to acclimate. ‘We want to repeat last year’s performance but do better,’ he said, targeting qualification.
The US, the defending champions, leads the field of 22 nations.
