Bwayuya Primary School in Kasokwe Sub-county, Kaliro District, has seen a dramatic turnaround with pupil numbers tripling from 200 to 712 over the past eight months. This growth follows extensive renovations funded by Modern Group of Companies at a cost of Shs172 million.

The project refurbished two classroom blocks for Primary One to Seven, offices, and added tiled floors, roofs, and ceilings. Previously, the dilapidated structures were uninhabitable, dusty, and short on furniture, leading to low enrolment, high absenteeism, and parental disinterest.

School Director of Studies Godfrey Kibule highlighted the improvements in enrolment and retention since the handover on May 1. Teacher Sylvia Namusobya, with 16 years at the school, noted that the new environment has made pupils more attentive, especially boosting girl-child performance.

Kaliro District, part of the struggling Busoga sub-region in Primary Leaving Examinations last year, faces challenges like child labour, poverty, and poor infrastructure. District Senior Education Officer Moses Wambuzi urged parents to support the renewed efforts by providing materials and encouraging attendance.

Modern Group’s Managing Director Deep Dhola, representing chairman Ashish Monpara, called the investment key to community development. The company also awarded scholastic materials to top pupils, scholarships to 40 Busoga students including 18 from Kaliro, installed a Shs75 million 200KV transformer for five villages, and donated a motorcycle to local LC1 chairman Samuel Kimalyo.
