A devastating landslide in Murora sub-county, Kisoro district, claimed the lives of two teenagers early Sunday morning around 5:00 a.m. The victims, 14-year-old Brenda Musoni and 12-year-old Eseri Mujawimana from Bukerahe village, were visiting their grandparents during school holidays when the disaster struck in Nyabiyonga village.
The mudslide partially buried the house during a heavy downpour, leading to the girls’ suffocation under debris. Their grandparents, 70-year-old Benon Mulema and 60-year-old Avelina Mbaboneye, were injured but rescued by locals and rushed to Chahafi Health Centre IV for treatment, according to Kigezi region police spokesperson Elly Maate.
Local resident Patrick Muhire noted the children often stayed with their grandparents. Despite the challenging hilly terrain, community members quickly recovered the bodies.
This marks the second major landslide fatality in Murora sub-county; eight people died in Biizi and Gihuyaga villages in May 2023.
In related news from Rukungiri district, three men perished in floods on April 27 in Kyakabarisinga village. They were burning charcoal in a valley when sudden floodwaters swept away their makeshift shelter during prolonged rains. Rescue attempts failed despite alerts from a survivor.
Kigezi region continues to face severe weather challenges from ongoing heavy rainfall.
