Sam Brian George Kkunsa runs Tribes Gorilla Trekking Tours with eight years in the industry, while working as a software engineer. He studied Tourism and Hospitality Management alongside ICT at Kampala International University, sparking his unique blend of tech and travel.
His venture began in 2018, inspired by figures like Amos Wekesa and his late mother Bernadette Nakiganda. Initial trips targeted campus students to Jinja, overcoming early setbacks by broadening outreach to other universities. With his sister’s legal help, he registered the business and opened an office in Wandegeya.
The 2020 pandemic halted operations, prompting Kkunsa to hone digital skills like web development and marketing at a local Wi-Fi spot. This prepared him for recovery, stressing the need for strong online presence, branding, and strategic locations for tour firms.
Kkunsa views Uganda as an underexplored gem, highlighting primate diversity, cultural tribes, food tours, and Jinja’s adventures. He urges diversification from gorilla trekking amid competition from Rwanda.
Sustainability drives his vision, integrating tech like hybrid vehicles with Wi-Fi for real-time sharing. His firm offers community immersions, such as urban farming in Bwaise, boda tours, market fruit tastings, and school visits. Through the Bernadette Nakiganda Foundation, he promotes tree planting and conservation education.
Challenges include booking uncertainties, high marketing costs, pricey permits, and poor roads to attractions. Looking ahead, Kkunsa plans an eco-friendly luxury ranch with sustainable cottages.
