Taiwan's President Lai Defies China on Surprise Eswatini Visit, Labeled a 'Rat' by Beijing

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te arrived unannounced in Eswatini, asserting his nation's right to global engagement despite Beijing's efforts to block the trip and its harsh condemnation calling him a 'rat.' The visit underscores ongoing tensions over Taiwan's diplomatic ties with one of its few remaining allies. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te landed in Eswatini on a surprise trip, declaring that his country has every right to interact with the world and no nation can hinder it. He made the statement to King Mswati III upon arrival, emphasizing Taiwan’s sovereignty as the Republic of China.

The journey marked the 40th anniversary of the king’s accession. Eswatini remains one of just 12 nations maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taipei. Taiwan accused China of pressuring three Indian Ocean states last month to deny overflight rights, forcing a postponement of similar plans.

To avoid interference, Taiwanese officials opted for an ‘arrive then announce’ strategy, using an Eswatini government plane. A senior security official noted this approach reduces risks from external forces.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office fired back, branding Lai’s actions despicable and likening him to a ‘rat scurrying across the street,’ predicting international ridicule. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council dismissed the remarks as tiresome and irrelevant, insisting no permission from Beijing is needed.

The earlier cancellation drew criticism from the U.S. and concern from the EU, Britain, France, and Germany.
