On May 2, Uganda officially opened its first Packaging Centre of Excellence during the National Science Week. Science, Technology and Innovations Minister Dr. Monica Musenero presided over the launch, highlighting how poor packaging has hindered market access and sales for local goods.

The minister stressed that the centre will equip innovators with essential guidance, knowledge, and standards to compete internationally. She urged stakeholders to actively utilize the facility for maximum impact.

Located at the UMA Showgrounds in Lugogo, the hub will function as a national resource for packaging research, training, technology advancement, and standard harmonization. It aims to enhance food packaging and preservation to global levels, fostering collaboration among industry players and supporting trade under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Dr. Ezra Rubanda Muhumuza of the Uganda Manufacturers Association described packaging as a brand’s frontline ambassador, balancing protection, communication, and usability. Julia Kigozi, dean at Makerere University’s Food Technology department, noted the centre’s role in scientifically testing materials to optimize preservation and cut costs.

The event forms part of National Science Week (April 30 to May 3) at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, themed ‘STI Works: Powering Uganda to a $500 Billion Economy.’
