Security forces in Wakiso District nabbed a suspected criminal gang member during an intelligence-driven operation in Nsangi and Kyengera divisions. The raid followed resident reports of suspicious behavior.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Vincent Kimbugwe alias Kasumali, was detained in Massanda Cell, Kyengera Town Council. A search of his residence uncovered an AK-47 rifle in poor condition, showing rust and a defaced serial number.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the weapon was sent to the forensic lab for ballistic testing to trace its history and involvement in crimes.
Interrogation revealed Kimbugwe’s ties to a gang with members on remand at Kitalya prison for aggravated robbery and murder. Sources noted the group’s history of securing bail and resuming activities.
Ballistic analysis connects the rifle, believed to be police property, to robberies in Kassanda, Nsangi, and Kabalagala in 2023. Prior operations recovered two guns and arrested nine suspects from the same network.
Kimbugwe is held in custody pending charges including illegal firearm possession, aggravated robbery, and possibly murder. Police praised Kyengera residents for their cooperation.
This incident underscores the growing issue of illegal guns, with the 2025 Police Forensic Report noting 107 firearm-linked cases and 16 unrecovered weapons.
Authorities vow to intensify efforts against illicit arms and gangs to bolster public safety.
