Abeeka Band, formed five years ago by former session musicians James Lubwama (Pages), Kevin Sekasi, Michael Sebulime, Allan Okia, and Dr. Tre, headlined their first major concert at Ndere Centre on Saturday night. Backed by Tusker Malt and The Singleton’s Band Nights initiative, the roots reggae and vibes event quickly became the talk of Kampala.
Success was evident early, with social media buzzing, excitement building by midday, and cars causing traffic jams on the road to Kisaasi as early as 4:15 PM. Ndere’s parking lot overflowed, and eager fans in Rastafarian gear—dreadlocks, Jamaican flags, and all—sang along to reggae tracks even before the show started at 9 PM.
The band opened with mellow roots tunes, covering hits from Morgan Heritage and Chronnix, whose Kampala debut they once backed under another group. They ramped up the energy with Ugandan classics like Radio and Weasel’s ‘Lwaki Onumya,’ honoring the late singer, keeping the crowd hooked.
Gigging six nights a week plus weddings and corporates, Abeeka drew friends from the industry. Their brand partnership, as Allan Okia noted, was hard-earned after years of hustle. The night showcased originals like ‘Nzija,’ signaling ambitions for continental festivals beyond covers.
Guest stars including Joanita Kawalya, Rachel Magoola, Bebe Cool, Levixone, Daxx Vibez, Kent, Flosso, Apass, and Maurice Kirya joined, dispelling any cover song disputes. The sold-out show turned away fans, proving Abeeka’s rise at Ndere’s amphitheater.
