Rt Rev Nathan Ahimbisibwe, Bishop of South Ankole Diocese, hosted journalists from Ntungamo District at his residence for World Press Freedom Day celebrations. He emphasized upholding professional ethics to ensure credible reporting that avoids misleading the public or sparking conflict.
“When you speak on radio or write, people trust you deeply,” the bishop said. “Choose words that prevent ‘fire’ rather than ignite it. Be evangelists of development, hope, and peace.”
He aligned this with the event’s theme, ‘Shaping a Future at Peace,’ urging media practitioners to promote progress while practicing it themselves, such as through coffee farming.
The gathering continued with a church service at St Andrew’s Kabuhome Church of Uganda, where the bishop praised journalists’ vital role in informing society and called for prayers amid their challenges.
At a luncheon hosted by journalists at Trendyz Hotel in Ntungamo, leaders reinforced these messages. Resident District Commissioner Mirriam Kagaiga Mugisha encouraged support for government programs and participation in opportunities like Emyooga funds, criticizing local journalists for rejecting them.
District Chairperson Samuel Mucunguzi, a former radio host, highlighted adapting to social media competition by focusing on constructive stories that build relationships rather than attacks.
Journalists’ coordinator Elias Rutugusa noted the event’s goal of bolstering media’s peace-promoting role.
