A tragic accident on May 3, 2026, along the Mbarara-Bushenyi Road claimed one life and left multiple people injured when a passenger taxi (registration UBE 047S) collided with a heavy truck.

Survivors recounted the harrowing incident, blaming the road’s deteriorated state. Samuel Ahereza, traveling in a nearby vehicle with four adults and three children, said their driver lost control after witnessing the crash but only he was hurt.

Eyewitnesses identified a sharp corner as a known blackspot, where accidents recur due to high speeds, rain, and lack of warning signs. Ronald Gumisiriza noted a similar crash just a month prior, calling for speed humps.

John Nasasira, who rushed victims to a local clinic, described it as overcrowded and stressed the need for ambulances stationed nearby. ‘A nearby ambulance could have saved lives by providing timely treatment,’ he said.

Ismail Basasira criticized the absence of school zone signs and demanded presidential intervention to rehabilitate the road. The truck fled toward Bushenyi, and police had yet to release casualty details or update on the driver’s pursuit.

Uganda recorded 5,383 road deaths in 2025, averaging 15 per day, per the annual police report.
