Over 50 families in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District, are reeling from severe flooding after River Malaba overflowed its banks early Sunday morning. The deluge swept away crops, livestock, and food stocks in Amoni ‘A’, Amoni ‘B’, Kataboi ‘A’, and Kataboi ‘B’ cells across Asinge and Akolodongo wards.

The floods hit while most residents slept, offering little time for evacuation. Cosmas Ekisa, LC1 chairperson of Amoni ‘A’ Cell, highlighted the sudden disaster and urged tree planting to combat climate change effects. He also called on the Uganda Red Cross Society to prepare for more heavy rains.

Christopher Igwalat, a resident with disabilities, narrowly escaped as floodwaters submerged his home and carried off his poultry. He mistook the forceful rush for an earthquake and now seeks government assistance, warning of continued dangers.

Stephen Ibukui from Amoni ‘B’ Cell reported destroyed food reserves and crops, raising hunger concerns for families. Town Clerk Isaac Aseu Omella confirmed no deaths but noted extensive damage. A assessment team is evaluating losses to request aid from the Office of the Prime Minister, blaming part of the issue on riverbank encroachments.
