The Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinal first leg between Kitara and Vipers ended in a goalless stalemate at Royal Park Butema on Sunday evening, leaving the tie evenly poised for the second leg.
Vipers may head into the return fixture with more optimism, as Kitara’s Derrick Kiggundu was the standout performer, making several crucial saves to deny the visitors.
Early on, in the third minute, Kiggundu tipped Jimmy Kalema’s dangerous cross-cum-shot onto the crossbar. The highlights came around the 29th minute when he blocked Patrick Kaddu’s close-range effort from a long throw-in flick-on, followed by a remarkable stop on Gaddafi Wahab’s awkwardly bouncing shot.
Vipers’ best first-half chance arrived just before the break, with Meddie Kibirige parrying a long-range strike from Karim Watambala after he beat Isa Lumu. The half was marred by a rough studs-up challenge from Kitara’s Jasper Ahebwa on Milton Karisa, earning only a booking.
After halftime, Vipers pushed forward, but Hillary Mukundane fluffed a golden opportunity in front of goal from a long throw-in. Kibirige comfortably held a volley from Yunus Sentamu.
Kitara ramped up late pressure, with Kiggundu tipping over two free-kicks from substitute Kabon Living, whose corners also came to nothing.
This draw mirrors their earlier league encounter, setting up another tight battle as both top-flight leaders pursue a league and cup double.
