Muteesa I Royal University lived up to their regal name by defeating YMCA Comprehensive Institute 1-0 in the Pepsi University Football League final at Nakivubo Ham Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sam Mutambo scored the match-winner, rising to head in a pinpoint cross from Twaha Bukenya in the 28th minute, securing the trophy for the Masaka-based institution in their second year of competition.

Head coach George William Ssengabi credited psychological preparation for the success, motivating players by emphasizing that winning the trophy would launch their careers. He challenged the team to match the traits of past champions and enlisted advice from former Cranes stars Tony Mawejje and Vincent Kayizzi.

The victory surpassed expectations from the club’s management, who aimed only for a final appearance. Muteesa showed resilience, holding off YMCA’s pressure, including a weak shot from Trevor Makubuya.

Their path to glory featured knocking out defending champions Uganda Martyrs University on away goals in the quarterfinals and ending St. Lawrence University’s seven-year unbeaten home streak with a 3-1 aggregate semifinal win.

In the third-place match, Kampala University beat St. Lawrence 1-0.

Muteesa I Royal University joins past winners like Makerere University (2012, 2014), Uganda Martyrs (2017, 2022, 2024/25), and others in the league’s history.
