Six Candidates Vie for Kyambogo University Guild Presidency in E-Voting Debut
Six candidates are competing for the Kyambogo University guild presidency on May 8, 2026, with over 40,000 students expected to vote electronically for the first time to address past issues like low turnout and violence. The race highlights key concerns over tuition policies, student welfare, and academic affairs, led by frontrunners Edward Agaba, Gregory Micheal Edigu, and Adrian Ssenabulya. Kyambogo University is set for its guild elections on May 8, 2026, where more than 40,000 students will elect the 23rd guild president and representative council members. This marks a shift to electronic voting via the student portal, replacing manual ballots amid past complaints of congestion, low turnout, and disruptions.
Dean of Students Ms Bridget Mugume explained the change stems from university council reports favoring e-voting for better efficiency and credibility. IT officer Nasser Mugwanya assured the system’s security, using phone codes and updated biodata, with computer labs available for those without smartphones.
The race features six candidates replacing outgoing president Emmanuel Andama. Tensions run high, with a tight contest among Edward Agaba (‘Sanitising the System’), Gregory Micheal Edigu (‘Power back to the Students’), and NUP-leaning Adrian Ssenabulya (‘Revolution of Solutions’).
Other contenders include Sharon Nuwahereza, the sole female candidate aiming to unite voices; James Okello, seeking to break silence; and Faikah Ibanda (‘Nothing About Kyambogo Without us’). Agaba and Edigu focus on restoring student power against funding shortages and unfair fees.
A recent NTV debate organized by the electoral commission highlighted demands for tuition policy changes, academic improvements, and welfare enhancements. Electoral commission chair Brian Atime urged high turnout and accurate contact details for smooth voting.
Outgoing president Andama noted many aspirants misunderstand the advisory role of the guild president.
