In the 2026 CAVB Men’s Club Championship held in Kigali, Rwanda, Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly clinched their 17th continental title by defeating Rwanda’s Police Volleyball Club in straight sets, earning a spot in the World Championships.

Uganda’s Gideon Angiro shone brightly, becoming the first Ugandan player to feature in the final. The 6-foot-5 outside hitter, now with Police after stints in Uganda, Albania, and Rwanda, played a key role in his team’s silver medal run—Rwanda’s first ever at this level.

Angiro reflected on his growth, stating he learned from top international players and identified areas for improvement.

Meanwhile, Ugandan coach Benon Mugisha led Rwanda Energy Group (REG) to bronze with a 3-1 semifinal win over Egypt’s Petrojet. Despite low expectations and an injury to middle blocker Samuel Engwau, Mugisha’s tactics propelled the underdogs forward.

REG’s success added to Rwanda’s medal haul, signaling volleyball’s rise in East Africa. Other Ugandan teams lagged: Nemostars placed 10th, Sport-S 16th.
