Dramatic moments occurred on May 3 at a Boston church where Archbishop Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, head of the Church of Uganda, faced verbal confrontations from some Ugandans living in the United States. Videos shared widely on social media captured the chaos as a few attendees disrupted the service, leading to a tense standoff.
Church spokesperson Adams Sadiiki described the event as a minor issue quickly managed. He noted that Kaziimba is on an official US tour and emphasized that the service proceeded smoothly afterward, dismissing online narratives as propaganda.
The reason for the outburst remains unknown. It comes shortly after Kaziimba’s April 19 sermon in Kampala, where he rebuked critics urging him to follow the example of martyred Archbishop Janani Luwum in challenging state human rights abuses.
In that address, Kaziimba questioned the value of such bold public stands, preferring a quieter approach like the biblical prophet Nathan over the fate of John the Baptist. He stressed his commitment to family and life, saying he follows God’s guidance rather than seeking martyrdom.
Critics have accused Ugandan religious leaders of silence amid government curbs on free speech, assembly, and media freedoms.
