Budaka Residents Caught in Debt Spiral from Quick Loans

Brightly colored posters along Budaka’s dusty roads advertise instant cash with no collateral and quick approvals, drawing in struggling residents. For market vendors, boda-boda riders, and small farmers, these loans seem like a quick fix for school fees, restocking, or medical bills.

However, high interest rates, short repayment periods, and unclear terms turn this relief into a nightmare. Financial analyst Jimmy Kaigo explains that borrowers often overlook the long-term costs, leading to asset sales, business closures, and families fleeing debt collectors.

Food vendor Margret Kanyi borrowed after a slow sales week but faced penalties on default, forcing her to take more loans. Now, most of her income services debt.
