Residents of Bwayuya Parish in Kaliro District are growing impatient with delays in accessing electricity, even after a 200kVA transformer worth Shs75 million was installed six months ago by Kaliro Sugar Modern Group.
The parish includes Bwayuya Trading Centre and villages like Butesa A, Butesa B, Bwayuya A, Bwayuya B, and Bwayuya C. Locals anticipated the project would boost their livelihoods, but they remain in darkness, relying on limited solar options.
Ali Mwesigwa from Bwayuya Trading Centre expressed hope turned to despair: “We were hopeful this would change our lives, but the transformer has remained idle.”
Kasokwe Sub-county councillor Milliton Baraza highlighted how the absence of power hampers development, keeping the area behind others.
Winnie Mbeiza from Butesa B village took a loan for a drinks business expecting electricity, but now struggles with repayments amid the wait.
Jacob Odour, an agriculture officer at Modern Group, noted the transformer’s aim to aid nearby villages and enhance productivity, yet benefits are pending.
UEDCL spokesperson Jonan Kiiza explained the hold-up involves mandatory technical assessments to verify standards for safety and reliability before grid linkage.
As the Ministry of Energy pushes for quicker rural electrification, locals urge faster action to unlock business growth and better living standards.
