Bwaise, a densely populated slum in Kampala’s Kawempe Division, houses over 90,000 residents facing frequent flooding, informal economies, and daily struggles with poverty. Many families survive on less than a dollar a day through vending, food stalls, and carpentry, while grappling with food insecurity affecting nearly 40 percent of households.

Despite these challenges, community spirit shines through grassroots efforts like plastic briquette production and vocational programs from groups such as AFFCAD. Social bonds hold strong amid the chaos of boda-bodas and street life, supported by initiatives like Tusitukirewamu for vulnerable women and families.

In a bold private-sector collaboration, musician Joshua Baraka led MARU Credit and Just Believe Foundation in hosting ‘Just Believe Day.’ The event provided essential food aid to over 1,000 families hit by rising costs, serving as a crucial safety net.

Baraka highlighted the impact, stating it shows what’s possible through united resources. Beyond handouts, the outreach included workshops on the music industry, business skills, and intellectual property rights, aiming to turn talent into sustainable livelihoods.

MARU Credit’s Managing Director Joshua Mazune emphasized bridging gaps for overlooked communities, blending finance with cultural influence to redefine corporate social responsibility.
