Lira City is in mourning following the sudden death of Joe Ebong, popularly called Biggie, the chairman of the National Resistance Movement Veterans League. The 56-year-old passed away on Monday night, May 4, 2026, at Amazon Pub while watching Everton’s match against Manchester City.

Eyewitnesses report that Ebong leaped in joy when Everton netted their third goal, only to suffer a heart attack moments later. Friend Carrick Mguta, who was present, recounted: “He jumped up to celebrate the third goal for Everton in Amazon but got a heart attack, was rushed to Avento Clinic and is no more.”

Medical staff at Avento Clinic confirmed his death shortly after he arrived. Tributes have flooded in, with colleagues remembering Biggie as approachable, community-oriented, and deeply dedicated to the NRM Veterans League.

Patrick Okwir, spokesperson for Lango Cultural Institution and Lira City Council speaker, expressed shock: “It’s terrible. It’s hard to take in.” Friend Geoffrey Omara speculated an underlying health issue might have played a role, calling the incident disheartening.

The Vintage Lounge WhatsApp group, where Ebong was active, extended condolences to his family, praying for their strength. He leaves behind a strong legacy of service in Lira City.
