The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially designated May 12 as a public holiday for the swearing-in of party leader and President-elect Yoweri Museveni at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.
NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong made the announcement during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre on May 5. He described the day as a significant national milestone, combining inauguration with victory celebrations.
Museveni secured 71.6% of the vote (7,946,772 votes) in the January 15 presidential election, according to the Electoral Commission, outperforming seven rivals.
Todwong highlighted NRM’s dominance in Parliament with 372 of 529 seats, alongside strong showings in local government: 117 of 149 LC5 chairpersons and 3,776 of 4,736 LC5 councilors.
The party plans a vibrant event in collaboration with the government and Office of the President. Districts will send delegations of 50 members each to join the festivities.
Upcoming activities include swearing-in ceremonies for MPs, LC5 chairpersons, and mayors following the presidential inauguration.
Note that public holidays are typically declared by the Public Service ministry.
