Peter Mulira, fondly called a gentle giant, has left an indelible mark on Buganda Kingdom and the Rotary community. Appointed by Ssabataka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II in 1992 as a special nominee to the Ssabataka Supreme Council, he played a pivotal role alongside Rev Dan Kimbugwe Kajumba in recruiting influential figures tied to the royal family.
Mulira graciously joined and made significant contributions, serving as a minister and vice chairman of the invitations sub-committee for the 1993 coronation of Kabaka Muwenda Mutebi II as the 36th Kabaka. His colleague Godfrey Kaaya Kavuma was also appointed, later becoming a Ssaza chief and CBS Radio founder.
The two first connected in 1978 in Nairobi exile, part of a tight-knit Ugandan community. Back home, they served as Kabaka’s ministers and Rotarians at Kampala West Club, where both were past presidents. Mulira advanced to assistant governor of Rotary District 9200, covering East Africa.
Described as soft-spoken yet assertive, with sharp humour, Mulira was a patriot and royalist who blended modernity with tradition. Proud of his heritage, he was social, generous, and deeply family-oriented. An art lover, he frequented Nnyanzi Art Studio, calling it a ‘visual feast’ and admiring works like ‘FAMILY FRIENDS’.
May God comfort his family, Rotary friends, and Buganda.
