During a recent NRM retreat at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, State House online editor Nelson Bwire Kapo lectured MPs and delegates on key African issues, drawing from President Museveni’s 2021 inauguration speech.
Kapo shared excerpts on social media highlighting Museveni’s call for an African market and unity. This drew sharp criticism from an opposition supporter, @TibzKarts, who accused Museveni of opposing Muammar Gaddafi’s 2007 push for African unity.
Kapo counters that Museveni has consistently supported unity but favors a gradual process. He outlines three stages: first, fostering patriotism and Pan-Africanism to end identity politics and boost wealth creation through commercial agriculture, industry, and ICT.
Second, economic integration by expanding markets beyond national borders to East Africa and the continent, noting Africa’s 1.5 billion people versus limited intra-African trade. He contrasts this with Africans’ passion for European football.
Third, strategic security to counter global threats, as Africa lacks a strong defender like Europe has the US. Kapo warns of superpowers monitoring Africa and references past humiliations, like NATO blocking African leaders’ plane in Libya.
He calls on young leaders to avoid historical rivalries and focus on Unity of Africa, Prosperity of Africa, Security of Africa, and Fraternity of Africa. Quotes from colleagues emphasize wealth pursuit and East African integration.
