Masindi District Local Government and the central government have completed a feasibility study to develop Kafu Junction into a modern tourism stopover centre. Conducted by E. Marriet Consultants Limited, the study envisions the site as a vital gateway for visitors heading to national parks and cultural sites in western Uganda’s Bunyoro sub-region.
The proposed Kafu Tourist Stopover Centre will feature accommodation, a tourist museum, fuel station, restaurant, information centre, and a monument honoring Omukama Kabalega. Additional amenities include parking areas, a children’s play zone, mini taxi park, green landscapes, and improved market stalls for traders.
Masindi Chief Administrative Officer Samuel Ruhweza Kaija noted that the project emerged from a competitive national selection, with only two districts advancing. Following government approval, the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development will seek private investors via a public-private partnership model to fund and build the facility.
District tourism officer Riita Karungi, who spearheaded the initiative, highlighted years of lobbying with the National Planning Authority and finance ministry that elevated the concept to this stage. Local leaders, including District Chairperson Cosmas Byaruhanga and Buruli County MP Aled Ronald Akugizibwe, praised the strategic location and urged expanding the four-acre site for future growth.
Residents and traders anticipate enhanced services for travelers, alongside economic benefits like job creation and business opportunities, positioning the hub as an entry point to the region’s tourism circuit.
