Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga recently reflected on his 13-year tenure, describing it as a period defined by building strong systems for transparency and efficiency. Speaking at his Mengo residence, he stressed that clear procedures now guide interactions with partners and investors.

Mayiga acknowledged resistance to these reforms, noting that new systems often unsettle those accustomed to old practices. On land issues, he clarified that the kingdom controls only about 5% of registered land in Buganda, with much privately or government-held, and demanded the return of thousands of square miles.

He affirmed professional management via the Buganda Land Board, insisting no kingdom land has been lost to grabbers. Occupiers like security forces must lease, buy, or regularize, amid broader challenges like inefficient land offices and population pressures.

The Etofali campaign, aimed at self-reliance, raised funds for projects like Kasubi Tombs reconstruction but faced criticism. Mayiga viewed it as a mindset shift with lasting benefits.

The Kabaka’s illness stood out as the toughest challenge, marked by speculation and scrutiny, yet he embraced criticism as part of leadership.

Achievements include boosted revenues through Luwalo Lwaffe, social programs, and Emmwanyi Terimba for coffee and farming. Future efforts under Situla Omutindo will prioritize production and manufacturing for jobs.

Mayiga, a lawyer and long-time kingdom figure appointed in 2013, has deep roots in Buganda’s restoration.
