SC Villa’s attacking trio of Frank Sebuufu, Hassan Mubiru, and Najib Yiga has been instrumental in the team’s impressive season. Despite Sebuufu’s nine league goals topping Yiga’s eight, Yiga’s rising impact has helped Villa secure fourth place in the Uganda Premier League with 51 points, trailing leaders Vipers by eight points with four matches remaining.
In the Stanbic Uganda Cup semifinals, Villa notched a convincing 2-0 first-leg victory over URA at Nakivubo. Yiga opened the scoring with a clinical finish after a smooth team move started by Mubiru and involving Patrick Kakande, beating goalkeeper Chrispas Kusiima. He continued to trouble URA’s defense before being substituted past the hour mark to stay fresh for the return leg on May 16 at Kadiba.
The win was completed dramatically when Andrew Otim’s pressure led to an own goal by URA’s Moses Aliro. This positions coach Zeljko Kovacevic’s Jogoos for their first cup final since 2015, especially with the other semifinal between Kitara and Vipers tied 0-0 after the first leg.
Yiga, who shone at Vipers with trophies but faded at Kitara, has rediscovered his form under Kovacevic’s guidance at Villa.
In league action, relegation battles heat up: bottom side Calvary (13 points) hosts sixth-placed Police (44 points) at Midigo Grounds, while Lugazi (23 points) faces Mbarara City (20 points) in a crucial six-pointer at Lugazi Stadium.
