The brazenness of criminal elements has reached alarming levels, exemplified by a recent break-in at the heavily guarded Central Bank. This incident, where equipment including laptops and a CCTV server was reportedly stolen, raises serious questions about the state of security and the escalating audacity of criminals.
While police have conducted raids and arrests, targeting motorcycle dens and phone shops, the problem persists. Machete-wielding gangs continue to attack citizens, causing injury and even death, particularly during evening commutes. The Police Annual Crime Report 2025 indicated a staggering 1,898 motorcycle thefts in the Kampala Metropolitan Area alone last year, a statistic deemed unacceptable given the prevalence of motorcycle transport.
This surge in crime extends beyond motorcycle theft, with reports of stolen phones, motorbikes, and shop robberies becoming common even in areas previously considered safe, like Arua City. The constant threat forces shopkeepers to close early and leaves citizens feeling vulnerable.
The implications of this crime wave are far-reaching. It not only endangers individuals and disrupts livelihoods but also severely impacts family survival and community economic well-being. Furthermore, such widespread criminality damages Uganda’s image, deterring tourism and investment, and discouraging economic activity as citizens fear for their safety and property.
