At least five police officers who were on duty during a recent break-in at the Bank of Uganda (BoU) are now under investigation. These officers have been detained at the Railway Police Station in Kampala to aid in the ongoing probe.

A joint investigation team, comprising members from the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala and BoU officials, is scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detectives have seized the mobile phones of the arrested guards, submitting them for forensic analysis on suspicion of complicity with the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, Crime Intelligence officers are examining 30 laptops that were recovered in a separate operation in downtown Kampala. While no BoU staff have been formally questioned yet, investigators suggest that if the forensic analysis links any bank employees to the suspects, they will be summoned.

The break-in, which occurred overnight, resulted in the theft of seven laptops containing sensitive commercial data, including sales transactions and consumer insights. This information is crucial for market trend analysis and economic forecasting.

BoU’s Director of Communications, Kenneth Egesa, confirmed the unlawful entry and theft but declined to provide further details due to the ongoing investigation. He assured the public that the bank’s core operations remain unaffected.

The recovery of the laptops is part of an intelligence-led operation. While suspects were initially arrested and released on police bond, the status of the recovered items is still being verified.

This incident comes against a backdrop of a reported decline in break-in cases nationally, according to the Police Annual Crime Report 2025, though burglaries and shop break-ins remain significant concerns.
