Nearly ten years after French President Emmanuel Macron’s influential address in Ouagadougou, a new era of France-Africa relations is unfolding. The upcoming Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, co-hosted by Kenya and France, signifies a commitment to forging balanced and forward-looking partnerships.
This renewed engagement is centered on a partnership of equals, emphasizing shared interests, mutual respect, and tangible achievements. Uganda, with its robust economic growth and growing youth population, exemplifies the potential for such collaborations.
The French approach in Uganda is guided by three core principles: “Team up,” “Scale up,” and “Multiply impact.” France actively collaborates with Ugandan authorities and youth, integrating with “Team Europe” while acting as a partner to “Team Africa.” This involves leveraging a diverse range of financial tools to support Uganda’s key investments in infrastructure, energy, and health, and fostering networks for entrepreneurs and women leaders.
These principles have translated into significant outcomes. For instance, a long-standing partnership with the National Water & Sewerage Corporation has improved access to safe drinking water for millions. Furthermore, France, alongside the EU, has supported electricity distribution expansion, benefiting hundreds of thousands, and is actively involved in projects to transform Uganda’s coffee sector and enhance financial access for small businesses.
The Africa Forward Summit aims to be a platform for deepening mutual investment and addressing shared challenges, from strengthening health systems to boosting digital competitiveness. It will highlight the diverse actors shaping Africa-France relations, with a particular focus on youth and the private sector, to consolidate ties and build impactful, future-oriented partnerships.
