Uganda has clinched its inaugural gold medal at the ongoing 17th Africa Swimming Championship held in Algeria. The achievement was spearheaded by Gloria Muzito, who showcased exceptional talent in the senior women’s 100m freestyle.
Muzito’s impressive performance began in the heats, where she qualified as the fastest with a time of 56.66 seconds. She continued her strong showing into the final, splitting 26.91 and 28.74 seconds for a winning time of 55.65 seconds.
She outpaced Zimbabwe’s Paige van der Westhuizen, who took silver with 56.54 seconds, and Kenya’s Sara Mose, who secured bronze at 57.49 seconds.
Other notable performances included Peyton Suubi in the junior women’s 1500m freestyle, clocking in at 19:25.15. Suubi also participated in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay alongside Tara Kisawuzi, Jordan Ssamula, and Inhensiko, where the team finished ninth overall.
In the senior men’s 100m freestyle heats, Tendo Mukalazi achieved a personal best of 52.21 seconds.
