A tragic road accident in Kiryandongo District on Thursday morning has claimed the life of a bus controller and left several students and staff from Gulu Secondary School injured. The incident occurred around 5:44 am when the school bus, carrying students to Jinja for a study tour, reportedly collided head-on with a Fuso truck.
According to traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the crash happened in Kigumba Town when the bus driver allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle.
The bus controller was confirmed dead at the scene. Reports indicate that over five students sustained injuries, primarily minor cuts, with one female student suffering a significant leg injury. A photographer traveling with the group sustained broken legs, and a teacher suffered fractured arms.
Gulu Secondary School headteacher, Irene Mwaka, stated that all 40 students on board were safe and were undergoing medical checks at Kiryandongo Hospital. Arrangements are being made to transfer the injured individuals to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor for continued treatment.
This incident highlights the ongoing road safety concerns in Uganda, where traffic police statistics released in March 2026 indicated a rise in road traffic deaths, averaging 15 fatalities per day in the previous year.
