Frustration is mounting among residents along the Iganga-Luuka-Kamuli Road as they face significant delays in receiving compensation for their land, which is required for the ongoing multi-billion-shilling infrastructure project. Despite eviction notices being issued, many families remain in limbo, unable to relocate due to the lack of promised funds.

“We destroyed our gardens in preparation to vacate, yet some of our homes still lie within the road reserve. We are ready to relocate, but we need to be compensated first,” stated Mr. Sande, a resident of Kitayunjwa.

Several communities, including Bulwamaza, Naminage, and Bugogolo, report that boundary markers have already been placed through homes and gardens, while compensation remains selective. “This is frustrating because everyone wants to move forward at the same time,” commented Mr. Dan Alibundi, LC I chairperson of Bulwamaza Zone.

Kamuli Resident District Commissioner, Ms. Rose Birungi, acknowledged the delays, noting that only a limited number of project-affected individuals have received payments. She urged the government to address the matter urgently.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) spokesperson, Mr. Allan Ssempebwa, advised patience, explaining that compensation is being disbursed in phases as funds become available. So far, compensation has been completed for approximately 8 kilometers of the 28 kilometers surveyed from the Kamuli side.

The 54-kilometer road project, valued at Shs300 billion and undertaken by Arab Contractors, began in October 2025 and is expected to be completed within 36 months, aiming to enhance transport and trade in the Busoga sub-region.
