The Ivorian government has taken the decisive step of dissolving the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI), following persistent accusations of bias and mismanagement. Government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly announced the decision on Wednesday, stating it was made to facilitate a new electoral management system.
The dissolution comes after repeated disputes over the commission’s perceived lack of independence and its handling of past electoral processes. Coulibaly emphasized that the objective is to ensure “peaceful polls” by restoring public confidence in the electoral framework.
The CEI, established in 2001, has been a central figure in Ivorian electoral disputes, including the violent aftermath of the 2010 presidential election. Opposition parties have frequently voiced concerns that the commission’s composition leans too heavily towards the ruling coalition, a claim previously denied by authorities.
Last year’s presidential election, which saw President Alassane Ouattara secure a fourth term amidst controversy over barred opposition candidates, further fueled these criticisms regarding the inclusivity of the process. Discussions are now underway to determine the structure that will succeed the CEI.
