Mourners gathered in Rukiga District on Thursday to pay their last respects to Veleriano Kibahigire Kambamu, who passed away at the age of 92. Kambamu died on May 3, 2026, in a Kampala hospital while undergoing treatment for diabetes and heart-related issues.

He is remembered as a pioneer in radiography in Uganda, having been one of the first Ugandans to study the discipline in the United Kingdom during a time when such specialized medical services were scarce in the country. Kambamu held significant positions, including heading the radiologist team at Mulago National Referral Hospital and later taking on administrative roles at Mulago School of Radiography.

Beyond his professional achievements, Kambamu was lauded for his philanthropic spirit. Friends and family recall him as an inspiring figure who encouraged education among parents in the area. He also extended financial support to vulnerable children, paying their school fees, and was known for his kindness and willingness to offer advice.

Despite facing health challenges later in life, including diabetes which led to the amputation of both his legs in 2018, Kambamu remained a strong figure in his family, deeply devoted to his Roman Catholic faith.

Kambamu’s educational journey included studies at various institutions, culminating in advanced diplomas in radiography from the UK and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Constitutional Affairs from London University. His career spanned roles as a tutor and radiographer in government hospitals, and he also served as president of the Radiographers Association before his retirement.

He is survived by 10 children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
