St Mary’s Kitende has been crowned the U17 netball champions after a hard-fought 34-30 victory over Hamdan Islamic School in the USSSA Ball Games I final held in Mukono.

The final match, held at Seroma Christian High School grounds, saw two promising but error-prone teams competing. Despite unforced errors from both sides, Kitende’s composure and effective finishing ultimately made the difference.

Kitende established an early lead, but Hamdan’s attacking duo of Rosemary Alowo and Rinet Nakigudde posed a consistent threat. However, Kitende managed to hold on to a 17-13 lead by halftime, thanks to the sharp shooting of Angelina Nyemok.

In the second half, Kitende extended their advantage to 30-19 by the end of the third quarter. Although Hamdan mounted an impressive comeback in the final period, scoring 11 goals to Kitende’s 4, the earlier deficit was too significant to overcome.

Kitende’s head coach, Noordin Hassan Kato, praised his team’s performance, highlighting their debut success in the U17 category. Hamdan’s coach, John Bosco Seguya, acknowledged costly mistakes but expressed pride in his young team’s growth and resilience throughout the tournament.

This victory secures the national championship for Kitende, though qualification for the FEASSSA Games is reserved for the U20 category later in the year. The final score was Kitende 34, Hamdan 30.
