South Sudan's President Kiir Replaces Army Chief and Finance Minister

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has made significant changes to his administration, dismissing the army chief and the minister of finance. General Paul Nang, who held the top military position since October, has been replaced.

Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, who had been serving as finance minister for less than three months, also lost his position. These frequent reshuffles at high levels of government are observed by analysts to be indicators of President Kiir’s attempts to strengthen his authority, particularly in light of uncertainties surrounding future leadership.

General Santino Deng Wol, a close associate of President Kiir and a figure from the President’s home region, has been reappointed as the new army chief. He previously held this role between 2020 and 2024.

Kuol Daniel Ayulo, a technocrat with prior experience in government ministries, has been appointed as the new minister of finance. The country continues to face challenges in fully implementing reforms stipulated in the 2018 peace accord, which aimed to end a protracted civil war.
